Oh the power of social networking {twitter specifically} to get the drama stirred up! You would think that election season would prompt indirect twitter beefs with candidates but recently it was Journalist Roland Martin and Rapper Lupe Fiasco who went head to head. The issue: VOTING Exactly what triggered the exchang of tweets is technically unnesscessary but the content in the exchange shows the polar opposite beliefs in the black community altogether. Lupe has maintained his extreme anti-voting/anti-system beliefs that he broadcasted to the world on his "Words I Never Said" track off of th Lasers...

If you're #TeamObama you probably received an email yesterday evening from none other than Queen B a.k.a Beyonce Knowles! Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z are hosting a campaign fundraiser for President Obama (date still to be determined) at Jay's 40/40 Club in New York. Can you imagine popping bottles with Hip Hop Royalty and the President?!? The invite email required you to make a donation and be entered into a drawing that would cover airfare and hotel and even allow you to bring a guest to the event; not to shabby! As we previously posted, the Carters aren't the only entertainers supporting...

We all knew she played for "the other team" but most people would've assumed that when that phrase was mentioned in the same sentence as Nicki Minaj, it would relate to her bi-sexual orientation not her political affiliation. Nicki's rap mentor and boss Lil Wayne dropped his highly-anticipated Dedication 4 and instead of discussion of Wayne's metaphors, the whole internet is buzzing about Nicki's lyrics on the Mercy remix, which is she and Wayne's rendition of Kanye West's hit single Mercy. The lyrics in question feature Nicki saying "I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney You lazy b*tches...

Powerful black women in entertainment have been making their rounds on the campaign trial lately for the Obama Administration. Our favorite musicians and actresses are using their celebrity and tapping into their fan base to push voting initiatives and to help close the gap in November, ensuring that President Obama gets another term. Recently, Nia Long attended an Obama  Fundraiser and is the cover woman of Essence Magazine this month, where she mentioned that she is doing some traveling and press junkits on behalf of President Obama. She also took to YouTube and created a video professing...

Today marks the birthday of Lesane Parish Crooks, better known as Tupac Shakur. The famous artist was killed at the age of 25 on September 13, 1996. The mystery behind his death created plenty of controversary and speculation; but his life story is a much greater interest. Tupac is know for his thought-provoking lyrics and social challenges. Shakur was Hip-Hop’s political scientist; he always mentioned the faults of our government and the errors of people. Tupac Shakur had no fear in challenging authority; the award-winning “Dear Mama” served as a statement on poverty and the class system...

Written by: Rosalyn Wells, Indiana University Graduate, pop culture and music fiend, and cultural critic. It is embedded in our culture—music is our heartbeat, and it tells our story. From the days of the negro spiritual, to the days of “Yes, yes y’all”, music has had a major hand in painting a socio-political picture. Some songs have become iconic because they accurately depicted the socio-political picture of that day—for example, “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye. During the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power movement, there were plenty of songs pushing a political...

The Daily Caller, a DC based political website founded by journalist Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel a former adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney, released a story criticizing First Lady Michelle Obama's decison to invite poet, rapper, actor and philanthropist Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. aka Common to an evening of poetry at the White House. The Daily Caller's reference point for criticism being a 2007 performance of a poem entitled "Letter to the Law", that included supposed "death threats" to police officers. In fine print the article also states that it has not been determined if this is an original...
