December 2, 2012

After the shock of Mitt Romney's and other critical Republican seats {i.e. the Indiana Senate race in favor of Democrat Joe Donnelly} wore off, the Republican party cleared the drawing board on their approach to social policy and the infamous 47%'ers. Following the direction of media personality Sean Hannitty, local politics is taking a turn from the Fiscal Cliff hoopla in Washington and focusing in on immigration (especially in coastal areas that are directly affected with the issue). Republicans in the state of California are jumping on the moderate bandwagon to attempt to sway the large hispanic...

Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Cory Booker could easily be considered on of the most famous local politicians in America. He has been a very vocal supporter of President Obama and he is very active on social networks. If you are one of his 1.2 million followers on twitter (@CoryBooker) you know that he, not a member of his staff actually tweets from the account and also communicates with his constituents about issues via twitter. Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney is closing the fundraising gap between himself and President Obama. This year’s election cycle is expected to be a tight one and both candidates are spending billions to best the other and win the election. Romney’s fundraising efforts have been incredibly successful at keeping money behind the campaign. Mr. Romney continues to maintain more cash on hand through his close relationship with the RNC, whose been building a massive war chest since 2009. Texas Voter ID: The Return of Jim Crow?

If you live in Texas, there is no way to avoid hearing about newly drafted voter id laws. The law mentioned would require a valid state identification card for anyone who is casting a ballot in the election. Supporters believe this will prevent voter fraud and opponents believe this is a tactic to discourage young and minority voters.  Wisconsin, Michigan, and South Carolina are a few other states that have found themselves in midst of similar debate. Historic organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P) have wasted no time opposing the passing...

Houston, Texas is currently the home to plenty of upset citizens and political officials. Yesterday, a Houston police officer, Andrew Blomberg was found “not guilty” for his role in a beating of a black teen involved in a burglary. The video featured below was captured by a surveillance camera, detailing 4 officers that played a role in kicking, punching, and stomping the apprehended teenager. City officials and protestors have remained vocal about the trial. Houston’s Mayor, Annise Parker immediately announced her disagreement with the verdict and her intention to make sure Blomberg...

Jury duty is something that most Americans dread being called for but what if you were called to serve on a jury holding an elected official accountable? Jurors in the affluent suburbian city of Noblesville, IN are being selected to do just that. Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White (R) is facing seven felony charges that include perjury, fraud and voting in the wrong district. The controversy at hand stems from allegations that White registered to vote at his ex-wife's home in Fishers' Township where he was a city council representative instead of the condo that he had recently bought...

The “Ricks” are having the worst week ever! Tuesday night was the New Hampshire primary. After the close and game-changing results of the Iowa caucus, I couldn’t wait to see the results of this primary. The winner of the primary was Mitt Romney, not much of a surprise there. In second place was Ron Paul. Where did Rick Santorum land in this primary? After such a great victory in Iowa, you might expect him to do well. Quite the contrary, Santorum found himself in the back of the pack, in fifth place. Santorum’s campaign spent 5 days in New Hampshire, a move that many strategists are calling...

It is no secret that Hispanic voters hold a great deal of power in any local election. In many local elections, they have been known to determine who wins and who loses a campaign. With a growing Hispanic population and more importantly, an increasing number of Hispanic citizenships; politicians are strategically seeking approval from the community. It’s the smart thing to do and everyone is doing it. Arizona, Colorado, Florida, and New Mexico are four key states where the Hispanic vote will hold great power. Presidential hopeful, Rick Santorum constantly makes note of traditional values...

Have you ever got ready to do laundry and found $20 you forgot all about- great feeling right?! Well imagine what forgetting all about $320 million would feel like- extreme excitement yea us too! Maybe that was the case for the state of Indiana where a displaced $320 million dollars that allegedly accumulated from taxes since 2007 was found. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels stated the money was a mere "programming omission", but this large chunk has not been included in the state's budget. Democratic members of the state legislature are speaking out against the alleged controversey. State Senator...

Federal judges in Texas experienced backlash from the Supreme Court over the weekend, in response to their attempt to draw new State Legislative and Congressional District maps. Traditionally, voting district maps are drawn according to population. Texas has experienced a population growth of over 20% in the past ten years the new districts are more than necessary. The majority of the growth in the state were by those of minority races, and Texas federal judges attempt to accommodate these changes to provide minorities with more voting power was not well received by higher courts. Because...
