Susan Rice is back, but this time for a different reason. You may remember her name from the wake of the Benghazi attack or her consideration to replace Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State. This time, the President has tapped her for a different position- National Security Adviser (once held by Condoleezza Rice).

Susan Rice has become a household name since her public interviews after the Benghazi attack. Although some officials felt she misled the American people on what exactly happened in Benghazi, others have found her assertive and take-charge attitude to be a great addition to the Obama administration. Fortunately for President Obama, Rice’s appointment does not require Senate confirmation so Republican opposition won’t impede the appointment.

Wednesday, President Obama noted, “I think everybody understands Susan is a fierce champion for justice and human dignity, but she’s also mindful that we have to exercise our power wisely and deliberately.” President Obama has remained very supportive of Rice and her resume strengths in the Middle East and Africa are sure to be an asset for her new position.

On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew demanded and received the resignation of acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller. Miller’s forced resignation was as a result of an IRS Inspector Generals Report that revealed the IRS in certain areas of the country, using discriminatory practice towards conservative non-profit groups.

The area that was highlighted in the report included two IRS employees in Cincinnati, Ohio who were overly aggressive in the handling of applications for tax exempt status of tea-party specific groups. When interviewed by the Senate Finance Committee Chairman, former Commissioner Miller did not provide any sort of explanation for the accusations of his employees. Speaker Boehner in an effort to get this week’s media sound bite called it “A Scandal” that some should go to jail over.

Republicans and conservative Americans have begun to make accuse the Obama Administration of foul-play (go figure), but President Obama made it clear in a press conference at the White House on Wednesday afternoon that rumor was FAR from the truth. He stated, “Americans have a right to be angry about, and I’m angry about it.” New methods will be implemented to ensure a fair application processes at the IRS.

Criminal, as well as, internal investigations are in process to monitor this siutation.

Although we’re not down with the tea party, bringing politics into neutral governmental agencies to discriminate against any group is totally unacceptable. What are you thoughts on this situation, could it be a Scandal or something that has been happening and was just now brought to the surface?

Spill the beans below…

On Monday the State of Minnesota became the 12th State in the U.S. to legalize same sex marriage. Last week the State of Delaware also passed similar legislation, amending their state constitution to no longer define the institution of marriage as that between a man and a woman.

For many politicians same-sex marriage is touchy issue, especially for those who have strong religious backgrounds in the Christian and Catholic faith. In 2011 President Obama announced support of same-sex and his opposition to Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Conservative Democrats and Republicans alike are still lobbying for DOMA.

DOMA was passed in 1996 by an overwhelming majority in both the House and the Senate and President Clinton passed it into law. The law essentially declared same-sex marriages illegal and does not enable partners to reap the same benefits as a married couple. At present, President Clinton has publicly announced denounced his prior decision and now advocates for DOMA’s repeal.

The Supreme Court has taken up the issue and heard oral arguments on March 27th, 2013 , in regards to DOMA’s affect on states and its overall ban on same-sex marriage on the federal level. Eight lower federal courts have found the Act to be unconstitutional. So the question remains will the growing number of states and the persuasive influence of judicial colleagues from the district court level be enough to push at least a 5-4 ruling on the United States v. Windsor appeal?

Spill the beans below with your thoughts on gay marriage and what way you think the court should go?

Have you been out of the political loop for a minute? Or maybe it’s not out the loop, because the same issues are being recycled to allow Democrats one week and Republicans another to point the blame at one another. All the back and forth just as Summer 2013 settles in and many members of the House prepare for their election season.

Conservative Republicans are drilling former Secretary of State (and potential 2016 candidate) Hillary Clinton on the Benghazi attacks… THEY WANT AN EXPLANATION AND THEY WANT IT NOW!!

The ladies of Capitol Hill got some royal eye-candy as Prince Harry of Wales, stopped by D.C. on his current United States tour. While there, the Prince toured an exhibit on clearning landmines with Senator John McCain. Women came flocking out of their offices to greet the Prince.

Before we jump to conclusions, as to the allegiance of the Royal family, Prince Henry finished out his visit at the White House with First Lady Obama. There he joined the First Lady and Jill Biden and showcased his softer side, for an event honoring military moms.

Though the drama between Democrats and Republicans is sure to continue, maybe the women who sustain this great nation got the motivation they needed to encourage their bosses to get the ball rolling (#wishfulthinking)!?!

Spill the beans with your thoughts…

If you’ve been watching the news you know that the “Sequester” aka forced spending cuts that are set to take place in accordance with the Budget Control Act. These mandatory cuts were set in stone after last years near shut down. In true political form, no consensus has been made as to what cuts should be made and what areas are too important to be affected.

Last night House Republicans introduced a bill that would allow for money to be shifted around so that the Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs will not be hit too hard by the sequester. The Republican bill also includes provisions to protect agencies such as the FBI from the across the board budget cuts. So what we learn is that, although Republican’s don’t mind stalling the political process, they will fight to protect the Department of Defense.

This proposed legislation is the band-aid on the bullet wound that is our national debt crisis. This bill is said to help to prevent the almost certain shut down on March 27, when federal agencies are set to run out of money. The bill will go in front of the Democratic majority in the Senate, where it’s concerns for domestic programs will be addressed. The overlooked domestic programs are likely to include federal appropriations for housing and educational programs.

Clearly the budget is a huge problem in our country but are legislators putting emphasis on the right areas? Is Defense more important than Domestic issues? Spill the beans with your thoughts below…

Last night President Obama gave his 5th State of the Union (STOU) address to a joint session of Congress and other notable guests. The speech touched on a myriad of issues facing the nation that many of us have been waiting to hear about. The economy which is said to be the number trending issue in current politics, was POTUS’ opening topic. With the March 1 deadline for sequester (mandatory government cuts) on the line, he called the Republican’s bluff as he highlighted the consequences that would result.

Climate change and environmental policy became an issue of top priority and a segue into conversation about the importance of “high quality” education in Pre-K and High School. Also emphasizing the critical role of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) cirriculum in preparing the next generation to compete in the global market.

President Obama challenged Congress to deliver Immigration and Gun Control leglislation ASAP! He pricked the heart of American’s with his “They Deserve A Vote” line, as he called out the names of highly publicized victims of gun violence.

Some critics say that this speech delivered the same broken promises, but proponents beg to differ, highlighting POTUS’ use of his platform to touch on sensitive issues. If you didnt catch the speech watch it below and spill the beans below…

In honor of Black History Month, we would like to recognize an organization that has been pivotal on the forefront of education, politics, and social oppression. This organization is the distinguished National Urban League. Established September 29, 1910 in New York City, the Committee on Urban Conditions Among Negroes was founded to help reduce racial discrimination and help with the adaptation of African Americans migrating from the South to the North.

In an era where African-Americans and Whites were differentiated by being regarded as “separate but equal,” this organization remained outspoken in the commitment of racial equality. Great leaders such as Eugene K. Jones help expand the organizations’ mission and appeal. In 1920 the organization took its current name, National Urban League (NUL). During the Civil Rights Movement, NUL hosted planning meetings to help leaders solve problems in the black community. Today, the organization has broadened its focus and advocates gun control, campaigns against violence, and mentorship programs.

This week MyBlackCoffee.com salutes National Urban League for helping strengthen the black community for over 100 years!

Not in the last 35 years have we had the opportunity to view a black woman at the center of prime-time series not excluding her influential presence on the Nation both on and off screen.

Kerry’s off camera connection to politics is exemplified in her role as a member of President Obama’s Committee on Arts and Humanities. As a member she plays an integral role in the broadening the support of Arts programs in education and youth development. She was also a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, where she got the crowd fired up and ready to “honor the sacrifice of our foremothers.” Her work has earned her numerous awards including the Congressional Black Caucus Phoenix Award for Social Advocacy and most recently the NAACP’s President Award.

Kerry Washington is not only blazing the trail for black women in entertainment but is setting the standard for the next generation of black women in politics and advocacy in general. We Salute her as part of our Black History in the Making!

Check out her acceptance speech from this years’ NAACP Image Awards below….

Things maybe looking up for the nearly 11 million immigrants currently living in the United States without citizenship. The Latino voters of America sent a message in November to Republican politicians who have previously shied away from Immigration Reform. This group being the tip of the iceberg for Democrats and President Obama in the last election are finally getting some real action.

On Monday a group of 8 Senators (both Democrat & Republican) drafted possible legislation that will be used to jump start the Reform process. The focus of the legislation deals with the undocumented individuals currently in the United States. Some of the details of the plan include allowing these individuals to obtain a provisional status to legally live and work in the U.S. pending them not having a criminal record. The next phase would then be to restructure policies to encourage future immigrants to come to the US legally. The primary focus is to cut current deportation exercises and increase border control to discourage the “jumping over the fence” notion.

President Obama is set to deliver a speech about his plans to get the immigration ball rolling also in Las Vegas later today. Addressing immigration issues was one of his campaign promises that he clearly intends to keep. The fact that both sides of the aisle are beginning to cooperating on this issue is a definitely a win/win for him.

Although moderate conservatives see the plus in addressing immigration reform, those staunch right-wingers are also making their oposition known, with claims of political amnesty. Some claim that opening the door for those who are already here illegally will just cost tax-payers more money and encourage further illegal activities.

Which side of the argument are you on? Is Immigration Reform something that should be tackled now during this term? Spill the beans below…

The nation’s capital was painted in the patriotic colors of Americans from all walks of life over the weekend, for our Fifty Seventh Inaugural Ceremonies. A private swearing-in ceremony took place on Sunday, while hundreds of thousands of citizens convened on the National Mall to participate in the public ceremony.

The ceremony included musical performances by Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce and James Taylor. along with the traditional commentary from distinguished guests. President Obama’s address was centered around the concept of “giving new meaning to the our freedom”. He focused on embracing the challenges that lie ahead as a new way of acquiring/sustaining freedom.

Superstar and major supporter of the Obama Campaign Alicia Keys was the featured musicial guest at all three of the President’s Inaugural Ball’s that took place on Monday evening. After a hard-fought election, President Obama seemed to be relieved and greatly appreciable of the inauguration of his second term. Historians typically call the second term of a President, “a lame duck session” because there are less goals met because there are fewer political implications.

President Obama has taken the stage for a second act, and the world is watching once again. What policies would you like to see the President focus on during this term?
