Senate to Hassle Hagel

January 8, 2013

On Monday President Obama made an official announcement revealing his choices to fill two vacant cabinet positions within the Administration. Former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense and top anti-terrorism advisor John Brennan for CIA Director. The decision to choose Brennan seems like a no brainer, he's been a part of the administration and has the experience needed to lead our nation's top intelligence office. But the decision to nominate Chuck Hagel has caused a world wind of opinions and mixed feelings. Hagel was elected to the Senate representing the State of Nebraska...

January 4, 2013

Yesterday on Capitol Hill the 113th Congress convened for it's first session! Ordinarily this is a joyous occasion, especially for rookie members, the official photos are taken and all the other good stuff but now that they are back to work will things be any different? Earlier this week a last minute (as we predicted) temporary Fiscal Cliff deal was reached. After both sides fighting tooth and nail the deal reached included features like a permanent 20% tax on Capital Gains and Dividends for individuals and families at the $450,000/$400,000 threshold (a major win for them because during the Clinton...

Help! What is the Fiscal Cliff?

December 31, 2012

Nothing sounds more daunting than the idea of driving off this fiscal cliff. What does it even mean? How do we prevent it? Whose fault is it? All these are questions going through the minds of many Americans. The term “fiscal cliff” describes the effect that will take place at the end of today December 31st. The cliff notes version (no pun intended) of some of these effects are: The expiration of payroll tax cuts (this will result in a 2% tax increase for workers) Expiration of the 2009 stimulus (aid to low-income workers) Expiration of American Opportunity tax credit, which helps...

Fiscal Cliff Crunchtime for Senate

December 27, 2012

Now that the Christmas Holiday has passed, it's time for politicians to return to Washington and address the most pressing issue at present, advoiding the Fiscal Cliff. Staying true to form the Republican majority House of Representatives was unable to reach a deal before the holiday break. That being said, the Democractic led Senate is taking up the mantle in an attempt to make a deal before the New Year. The current challenges surround the mere four days Senators have to reach a deal that will pass the House and get over to President Obama to be signed into law by the 31st. Senate Majority...

Next Up for Secretary of State, Senator John Kerry

Posted by: Madame Smith    Tags:  Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, President Obama, Secretary of State, Susan Rice    Posted date:  December 17, 2012  |  No comment

December 17, 2012

After all of the drama last week surrounding the September 11th Benghazi attacks and Amabassador Susan Rice's comments, Rice dropped her name from the pool of candidates for Secretary of State and speculation into who would be President Obama's next choice arose. White House sources have revealed that Massachusetts Senator John Kerry will indeed be President Obama's choice. Senator Kerry will still have to survive through a series of Senate Confirmation hearings to officially assume the role. Kerry, was selected as the 2004 Democratic Presidential Nominee and chairman of the Senate Foreign...

Gun Tragedy

Another shooting has taken place today. Another shooting has taken place today. It seems as if we have experienced shooting after shooting this year. Today, at least twenty people have been killed at an elementary school in Connecticut. Amongst the dead were children and administrators. Immediately, the first thing that comes to mind is “Who would do this?” Although this is a valid question, we should also focus on how this happened? Let’s first define mass murder: (1) The shootings must take place during a single incident and in a public place, (2) at least four people must die from...

Fiscal Cliff Funnies

December 11, 2012

With just 3 weeks until the dreaded "cliff date" no details have been released by President Obama or House Speaker John Boehner regarding negotiations between the two parties to curb the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that will ensue without action. Part of the hold up has been that Republicans don't want to raise taxes on wealthier people and also which programs would most likely see cuts. President Obama is petitioning hard to save Social Security from seeing a hit. Although this issue is pretty serious, we all need a little fun sometimes so check out SNL's parody of President Obama and Speaker...

Republican’s “Wise Up” on Immigration

Posted by: Madame Smith    Tags:  California Politics, Immigration, republicans, tim donnelly    Posted date:  December 2, 2012  |  No comment

December 2, 2012

After the shock of Mitt Romney's and other critical Republican seats {i.e. the Indiana Senate race in favor of Democrat Joe Donnelly} wore off, the Republican party cleared the drawing board on their approach to social policy and the infamous 47%'ers. Following the direction of media personality Sean Hannitty, local politics is taking a turn from the Fiscal Cliff hoopla in Washington and focusing in on immigration (especially in coastal areas that are directly affected with the issue). Republicans in the state of California are jumping on the moderate bandwagon to attempt to sway the large hispanic...

Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Cory Booker could easily be considered on of the most famous local politicians in America. He has been a very vocal supporter of President Obama and he is very active on social networks. If you are one of his 1.2 million followers on twitter (@CoryBooker) you know that he, not a member of his staff actually tweets from the account and also communicates with his constituents about issues via twitter. During a recent twitter conversation a constituent and Mayor Booker were discussing the importance of nutrution in public schools and the lack of access of poor families...

Message to Allen West: Let It Go!

November 19, 2012

Florida Republican and Tea Party member Rep. Allen West and his campaign committee should possibly take a listen to Keyshia Cole's 2007 hit single "Let It Go" and just concede already Its been two weeks since the 2012 Elections and the official unoffical numbers show that Democratic Challenger Patrick Murphy is ahead in the number of votes for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, just as announced on election day. Unhappy with this information West and his campaign demanded a recount but as we all know NUMBERS DON'T LIE. The numbers submitted as of Sunday evening show Murphy leading by approximately...
