August 12, 2011

The seed was planted months ago; Texas Governor Rick Perry has flirted with the idea of running for President for a while now. Saturday, August 13th Governor Perry will officially announce his bid for presidency in South Carolina. Why South Carolina? Historically, South Carolina has always been a great determinant of who receives the Republican nomination. It is believed by many political scientists, if you can win South Carolina, then you can win the election.

Rick Perry is not the politician that flies under the radar; he has undergone great criticism and support from Texans. After being re-elected for Governor in 2010, Perry has become the longest continuously serving governor in Texas history. Governor Perry was originally elected into the position, after then-governor; George W. Bush resigned to fulfill his role as President of the United States.

Perry is known for his southern swag. He doesn’t hesitate to mention his like for cowboy boots or the fact he is a generational Texan. It’s the same ‘Texas swag’ that worries many on whether he can garner enough support to win the nomination. Rick Perry has to earn more national attraction and support in order to find himself in the Oval Office. Perry also faces opposition for his views on international policy, state spending, and immigration. Some Republicans do not believe he has taken a strong enough position on immigration, while others believe he doesn’t have a great understanding of international policy.

There is no doubt that Perry will gain great support from large corporations and pro-gun organizations. He prides himself on his business allies in Texas as well as the pistol he carries around while jogging. These characteristics have served as great appeals to Texans, but will they be a turn off for national voters? A great number of Bush supporters are Perry Supporters. Both men were Governors, both men were Texans, and both share the same stance on some policy issues.

Rick Perry could very well be the re-birth of George W. Bush; is this a good thing or a bad thing?
