Whenever a congressional member leaves office prior to the end of their term, a special election is held. The district at hand is New York’s 9th Congressional district, composed of both Queens and Brooklyn. This district has historically been Democrat for nearly 100 years. As of Tuesday, September 13th that has changed; during the special election, Republican Robert Turner won the seat over Democrat David Werpin.

David Werpin is a New York State Assemblyman that comes from a well-known and prominent political family. Newly-elected Bob Turner is a former cable television executive that produced The Jerry Springer Show. It was just last November when Turner lost by 20 percentage points, when opposed by Anthony Weiner.

This election is more important than it may appear; New York’s 9th district is composed of a large group of Jewish citizens. In fact, for every Republican registered voter, there is 3 Democrat voters registered in the district. Turner’s campaign drilled in the idea that President Obama lacks support for Israel. Many of these Jewish citizens may have found belief in that statement, hence the results. These results could be a reflection of the upcoming voter turnout; if President Obama has lost support of Jews he will face an uphill battle in being re-elected. Losing a 100 year old – Democratic district to a Republican sounds like a clear message of disapproval for the President and his foreign policies.
