The topic of same-sex (gay) marriage is a hot topic in our soceity that is often danced around when brought up in conversations with politicians and leaves most people debating their opinions when mentioned at a social gathering.

Since the federal government has yet to take an official stance on the issue the decision in regards to legalizing gay marriage is left up to the states. Many states maintain the conservative viewpoint of only honoring marriage between men and women but that tide is slowing changing.

Recently Gov. Andrew Cuomo (NY) signed legislation into law that awards gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in the state of New York. New York is lucky #7 seeing as though five other states (Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, Conneticut, Massachusetts) and Washington D.C. allow same- sex marriages. Additionally, NY is the largest state to exercise this liberal stance.

NYC has always been a welcoming place for LGBT community and now that attitude has spread through the entire state. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated that “{this vote} is a historic triumph for equality and freedom.” This is without a doubt a major step for our country seeing as though NY is often the trendsetter for all things from fashion, music, and political trends.

The difference of opinions on this topic is sure not to cease so feel free to comment and let us know what you think. Is the legalization of gay marriage in New York a step in the right or wrong direction?…
