March 5, 2013

If you've been watching the news you know that the "Sequester" aka forced spending cuts that are set to take place in accordance with the Budget Control Act. These mandatory cuts were set in stone after last years near shut down. In true political form, no consensus has been made as to what cuts should be made and what areas are too important to be affected. Last night House Republicans introduced a bill that would allow for money to be shifted around so that the Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs will not be hit too hard by the sequester. The Republican bill also includes provisions...

Things maybe looking up for the nearly 11 million immigrants currently living in the United States without citizenship. The Latino voters of America sent a message in November to Republican politicians who have previously shied away from Immigration Reform. This group being the tip of the iceberg for Democrats and President Obama in the last election are finally getting some real action. On Monday a group of 8 Senators (both Democrat & Republican) drafted possible legislation that will be used to jump start the Reform process. The focus of the legislation deals with the undocumented individuals...

January 8, 2013

On Monday President Obama made an official announcement revealing his choices to fill two vacant cabinet positions within the Administration. Former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense and top anti-terrorism advisor John Brennan for CIA Director. The decision to choose Brennan seems like a no brainer, he's been a part of the administration and has the experience needed to lead our nation's top intelligence office. But the decision to nominate Chuck Hagel has caused a world wind of opinions and mixed feelings. Hagel was elected to the Senate representing the State of Nebraska...

Fiscal Cliff Crunchtime for Senate

December 27, 2012

Now that the Christmas Holiday has passed, it's time for politicians to return to Washington and address the most pressing issue at present, advoiding the Fiscal Cliff. Staying true to form the Republican majority House of Representatives was unable to reach a deal before the holiday break. That being said, the Democractic led Senate is taking up the mantle in an attempt to make a deal before the New Year. The current challenges surround the mere four days Senators have to reach a deal that will pass the House and get over to President Obama to be signed into law by the 31st. Senate Majority...

Word to the Wise: Don’t Say Rape!

November 14, 2012

By Guest Contributor: Marissa Murphy Legitimate or whatever the sort, the voters spoke and both sides generally agreed that candidates that mentioned rape, of any variety, were largely unpopular on Election Day. Most notably, Missouri Republican Todd Akin running for Senate against incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, whose seat was believed to be in trouble until the super-conservative Akin so eloquently explained that women who have been “legitimately raped” could somehow shutdown the possibility of pregnancy. Akin would not drop out the race despite GOP pressure. Young, pro-choice, & women...

In the home stretch of one of the most critical elections of our generation, political candidates must walk a fine line to win the hearts and votes of undecided American voters. Earlier this week, Republican Senatorial Candidate Richard Mourdock, expressed his opinion regarding abortion during an intense final debate with Democratic Congressman Joe Donelly and Libertarian candidate Andrew Horning. Mourdock stated that pregnancies resulting from rape are "something that God intended to happen," and then went back to clarify that he felt rape was a "horrible situation." (Not sure if that is the moment...

Election season is in full swing and candidates are making their stance on the HOT issues known. Any smart politician is going to identify with his party's platform and/or constituency base if he really wants to win. Taking a breather from the Obama vs. Romney war, we have scaled to the U.S. Senate race in Missouri that is all over national media circuits today. Repulican Congressman and now Senate candidate Todd Akin who is running against current Senator Claire McCaskill, made some pretty idiotic comments over the weekend regarding abortion laws and a womans right to choose. In an interview...

A very important vote took place yesterday in the Senate.  In a vote of 51-48, Senate Democrats voted to pass a plan that would allow tax cuts to continue for those earning household income less than $250,000.  The Republican proposal aimed at extending the tax rates for all. The Democratic tax plan is now headed to the House, where it is expected to die, due to Republicans outnumbering Democrats. The debate over the tax cuts aligns perfectly with the differing views of President Obama and Governor Romney. Democrats in favor of the proposal believe: Taxes should remain low for the low and middle...

We all know social media is a great way to connect with people and though it's an extraordinary gift to our generation, it's also a curse when your job is concerned. In the private sector, some companies bar employees from utilizing the sites at work and also require employees to sign agreements to not "speak on behalf" of the company. The public sector can be a little different especially when it pertains to members of Congress and their press secretaries. For a elected official on any level, a press person is one of the most important people on their staff. The way in which a politician is portrayed...
